Amy has a pen 17cm long that she wants to send as a gift to a friend. She finds a rectangular box in which the pen just fits. Both the length and the width of the box are 12 cm. What is the height of the box?

We know the pen is the hypotenuse of a triangle with base² = 12²+12² = 288
17² = 288+h²
h² = 17²-288 = (1cm)² so the box has height 1cm assuming the pen width can be ignored.
