Hide food like apples, tomatoes, and grapes in fridge or pantry because they eat people food like I have discovered. Try Rat X, peppermint satchets in room, as well as Victors bait and rat traps. If you have a lot of rat poop in your home or rats scratching your walls at night sorry you need an exterminator because they breed rats every 8-9 WEEKS.  Make sure to put down toilet seats, and block entryways or holes that rats come in. And have no food sources around because they produce fecal matter and urinate wherever they want!

I find the sticky glue traps are very effective. They're a bit cruel but I don't really care because they're just mini rats as far as I'm concerned.
