every district can be different, yes I went to kindergarten, but not middle school. HS was 4 years

I did not go into K, it was strictly volunteer in 1941 when I was 5 yo.  One of my best friends throughout the school years did go first into K.  So some of us did and some of us didn't.

Note we did have kindergarten in the 1940s where I grew up.  I wonder if you had it in the "early 60s" but, like me, you just didn't go because it was voluntary.
