Kind of.  The biggest problem is that in school, people are taught something, then they go and practice it.  Once they get into a job, they're given a problem and have to go find a solution.  Many new developers fail at this.  So, get good at finding answers to problems on your own without any help and that will get you over this hurdle.

Now how to demonstrate that you can do this?  Find an open source software project and join it (Google "getting started with open source contribution" for a wealth of information).  Join the project and start contributing code, fixing bugs, etc. If you add a feature to or fix a bug in an existing application, that is going to SHINE on your resume.
