Budgie behavior?

I have had two budgies, male and female, for three and a half years in the same cage. They have got along great apart from a bit of friendly tail pulling. Lately they have started fighting, drawing blood from each other. I have had to separate them. Anybody got any ideas why they have changed behavior. no funny answers please , this is worrying me.
