A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of the stomach bulges through the large muscle that separates the abdomen and the chest. Symptoms of a hiatal hernia are similar to those of GERD, such as heartburn, acid reflux, difficulty swallowing, chest or abdominal pain, and bloating.
