Most likely it's an enduring genetic variant of unknown nature, biologically pointless, but of no consequential impediment to survival of the species. Possibly it is intended as a buffer, a societal resource unencumbered by the demands of childbearing, akin to worker bees.

In layman terms, male homosexuality being genetic from the mother because it's linked to FEMALE fertility.

This doesn't explain lesbians, of course they don't have Y chromosomes.
