    Mario is only volunteering 1 day each month for a total of 12 days.

    If 'd' is the number of days he cleans cages then '12-d' would be the remaining days when he walks the dogs.

    To find the total hours, we multiply each of these by the number of hours each task takes.

    Cleaning cages (5 hours) --> 5d

    Walking dogs (90 minutes = 1.5 hours) --> 1.5(12 - d)

    Let's add those together and simplify:

    5d + 1.5(12 - d)

    = 5d + 18 - 1.5d

    = (5d - 1.5d) + 18

    = 3.5d + 18

    3.5d + 18

    Do you think you could do a similar problem now?

    5D + 1.5 (12-D) = Hours
