I received an email saying I had to upgrade by 11/30 or I would be cut off. Is this true?

That is a phishing scam. Ignore and delete it. This is how to identify legitimate Yahoo websites, requests, and communications: https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN2091.html

If you look closely at the header details, you will see it is not a real email from Yahoo or Verizon. Just delete the scam emails.
