People used to read books, make things, exercise, play music, talk to each other and do all sorts of things. Now they just sit.

Why hypothetically? People have gone without smartphones for thousands of years, up until just 10-15 years ago. People read, went outside, socialized, got more work done, or just enjoyed living in a less-connected world.

The people I know who have been forced by circumstances (or parents!) to give up their smartphones have trouble at first, but end up appreciating, like those above, that were lost when smartphones showed up. When they're finally able to start using a phone again they're a little less ready to have it dominate their lives than they were before.

I grew up in a world with no computers, mobile phones, electronic games - nothing like that.  My family didn't have a land-line telephone until I was about 10.

I went to school, did my homework, played outside with my friends, played board games, learned to cook and bake, learned to sew (a bit), painted pictures, did chores around the house, played with my toys, etc.

Later, I read books, played records on a record player, listened to the radio, did crafts, helped my mum make home-made wine and picked and bottled the fruits from the garden.

I rowed a small boat up and down the river - hundreds of things!

Read books and magazines, do gardening, cook, clean, socialise in person or on land-line phone, watch TV, go fishing, learn guitar.
