Can a supervisor who pushes his employee to his limits be a sign he likes him to be part of his team?

Like he’s actually trying to improve that one employee by being strict until he becomes an even better employee. The supervisor then offers full time employment and a promotion down the track.

Could it also be a sign he’s trying to get him promoted?

No.  Supervisors don't have time to pick out favorites.  They "push" the employees who can't keep up with the team as a last ditch effort prior to firing.
