My friend tried to offer to help an old lady cross the street but it made her angry! Should he stop making those offers?

What many don't realize is these golden olden ones, are sometimes so afraid they will be placed in a nursing home so quickly if they begin to lose their independence. When we realize what underlies certain behaviours our compassionate nature rises. These kinds of fears can be paramount in an older person... who just wants to be as independent as they can be, for as long as they can be.
Once you explain this to your friend, he'll probably be okay... he can always offer his assistance!

Your friend had the best of intentions. The fact that the person did not want help is irrelevant. Your friend did the right thing! He should continue to offer help if someone needs it.
People are often so afraid that they reject help from those like your friend who are only being kind.
Perhaps this COVID situation is to blame for the lady's anger. I recently stopped to help a man whose grocery bag had broken and his groceries spilled on the sidewalk. He screamed at me to get away from him! "Stay 6 feet! Go away! Are you crazy?"
He screamed at other people who stopped, as well.
Let's all just do the best we can!

Your questions indicate some sort of mental health issue - maybe it's about the attention. Maybe you plan to quit ninth grade and go into comedy full time. Maybe the adults told you to "go away and so something." Whatever it is, you need to find a better outlet for hours and hours of your time.
Sure, stop making those offers.

No, never stop being kind. But in the future, just ask. If the help isn't wanted so be it. If they get cranky, well that is on them.

No, there are way more people who appreciate sentiments like this than there are people who get angry over them. Common decency isn't as hated as the internet thinks it is.

Some people are so fiercely independent they refuse any kind of offers of assistance, especially elderly people.
That should not stop your friend because although this lady refused his offer there are many who will be grateful for his help so tell him NOT to stop offering his help.
