Considering making/selling homemade cars, would it be a bad idea to start what with the shift to electric vehicles going on?

The tooling alone to build "homemade" cars will set you back several hundred thousand USD if purchased used...

Look up how much three phase electrical service install costs....  Now, let's say you are an incredible machinist and welder already and have design chops to build a car from the ground up...  How are you going to cover yourself when one of your cars has a small defect and kills someone?
