It varies from location to location.

You should ask =   "How far offshore does the continental shelf reach off shore from California?"

Along parts of the U.S. state of California, for example, the continental shelf extends less than a kilometer (0.62 miles). But along the northern coast of Siberia, the shelf extends about 1,290 kilometers (800 miles).

Depends what shore you are at, no fixed distance from a shoreline.

Some have no shelf, others go for many miles.

The average width of the North. American Atlantic continental shelf is 50 miles (80 km) , but the maximum is almost 160 kilometers
