are other gemstones like emeralds rubys and saphires as hard as diomonds? If not, what is the difference?

No natural mineral is harder than diamond.  Be hard to explain the how and why without giving you a nice intro into crystal chemistry.  Hardness is a bond energy thing, to put it simply, and there must be some chemical compound that forms the most strongly bonded crystalline structure that nature can produce, and it happens to be diamond, at least here on earth, as far as we know.

And it isn't just a matter of having some strong bonds, hardness is really determined by the weakest bonds. the weakest link in the chain determines the maximum weight the chain can bear, after all.  There is no weak link in the diamond structure.  The bonds are all equally strong.

No. Diamond is the hardest natural substance. Some other jewels (such as opals) are quite soft.
