How come my Philips FW-C250 won’t turn on with the remote but can turn off with the remote?
I know it’s old technology, but I didn’t have a stereo system and this one works perfectly. I got it for a steal at the thrift store so if you can help, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Is it the same remote button that performs both functions? If not then the button might be worn out.

It's a longshot, but take the batteries out of the remote, press every button on it, put the batteries back in, and see whether it works.
If it does not, consider getting a universal remote that can be programmed to operate your stereo.

Possibly that could be why it was donated to the thrift shop.
You could invest in having it repaired,
but that would reduce the advantage of the low purchase price.
Not that I would have that model, but if I did,
I would leave it as-is and sit on the savings.
