I have a degree in electrical engineering, but I then worked as a computer programmer for 25 years.

Companies aren't magic.  A human being will look at your application for employment.  But there will be others that are also applying.  You have to be able to sell yourself to them.  You need to explain why they should hire you instead of one of the other applicants.

Every company has a different human being who will be looking at applications.  Each has a different personality.  You only need to find one who will be willing to take a chance on you.
