How did Edgar Allan Poe die?
I know there are lots of theories, but I'd love to hear thoughts on the legitimacy of different theories.

Edgar Allen Poe was killed by the Sandbaggers in Baltimore who would drag people from poll to poll forcing them to vote then killed them.

Well he wasn’t an habitual drunk or drug addled madman for a start. All that was made up by a rival who tricked his way into becoming his executor. Everyone who knew Poe refuted those claims at the time.
Tina is right about hydrophobia caused by rabies being one of the most credible theories, as is Robert (2 down votes!) about voter fraud.
This was known as cooping, where victims were kidnapped from the street, cooped up in a small cell and drugged before being taken to vote for whoever had organised it. The theory goes on that he contracted rabies through a rat bite when he was imprisoned. He was wearing old and ill fitting clothes which were not his when he was found, so this fits in with being kidnapped, his clothes taken from him etc.
Of course this is only a theory, but it does answer some questions about the condition he was found in.
Poe was a member of a temperance society when he died, he was not known to drink much at all. It’s incredible that his character assassination by “Ludwig” is still given credence.

Perhaps he died from that fatal and terrible realization that the less fortunate among us of us are forced to confront at some point in our lives..that when all is said and done nobody ever really cared enough, that the apathy and neglect of our fellow human beings is what eventually kills us all more effectively than anything else, almost from the moment we are brought into this world.
And then the bottle, or the drug, the firearm or whatever other tool of self-destruction a man chooses just becomes a convenient means to an expedited end to such an unjust and grievous existence.

Well, Edgar was a drunk, and I recall reading that he had been hospitalized earlier for that problem. Anyway, I think I read that they escorted him out the back door of some Baltimore bar, and he was found there in a back alley.
