Does putting Whiskey on your gum or tooth really help a toothache?

My Old Dad said so, he said it numbed it, not sure if that was an excuse as he liked his whiskey.

Eugenol helps. I believe it's clove oil. They sell it at most retail pharmacies in a little kit with tiny cotton balls and a little set of tweezers t soak the cotton ball and put on the tooth. It only helps until you can get to a dentist though. If you are at the point where you have a tooth ache, you need a dentist. It won't cure it but it will help until you can get to a dentist on Monday. Though many dentists have emergency phone numbers. If you can't afford a dentist, try looking up dental schools in your area. Sometimes they give reduced rates if you allow a dental student to do the work. Good luck.
