I'd think they were old with dementia or a young child. I'd tell them it's a highly contagious virus spread through droplets from people who have it and that a mask helps prevent the spread of those droplets.

I would be surprised, I think pretty much every one knows what covid is today. I would tell them it's covid 19 or coronavirus and it's very contagious.
