Is being emotionally numb done on purpose or does it just happen?

Like does your brain just find so much stress and have like a fight or flight mode to become emotionally numb to protect yourself or do you just feel so stressed and depressed you bottle it up and stop feeling it or both?

I think it can be both things or either one.  A person in constant pain sure would welcome numbness as an improvement, and stuffing your rage back down over a length of time does build a numbness - turns you into a sociopath ultimately.  But too, I think neglected babies and little kids can end up emotionally numb never having felt anything, really, and wondering what all the fuss is about when others talk of beauty or meaning, etc.
