Different families, HOWEVER, they are descended from a common ancestor named Miacis. In fact, Miacis was the common ancestor of bears, cats, dogs and foxes. All of the cutest animals!

They both can make good pets, but they do not reproduce together. Different breeds of dogs are still all dogs, but you cannot mix cats and dogs together, because they have more than breed differences, but are different species. One will not evolve into the other, though you can produce different breeds of dogs by mixing them with other breeds of dogs, and different breeds of cats by mixing them with other breeds of cats.
www.popsci.com says:
Dogs and cats are distinct species, incapable of producing offspring together because of the many differences in their genome.

If you don't know the answer to such a simple question like this then you can't be very smart.
A dog is from the canine family and a cat is from the feline family
However I have a sneaking suspicion that you already knew this.
