    Roasted is taken to mean heated in air. That is useful for a sulphide ore to convert it to an oxide. The oxide is then typically reduced to the metal by heating with coke. Copper sulphide can actually be converted directly to the metal by roasting in a controlled amount of air.

    Cu2S + O2 -> 2Cu + SO2

    The copper and oxygen are both reduced and the sulphur oxidised.

    sulfides, carbonates and hydroxides are usually roasted, to cause the loss of the volatile constituent (S, CO2, H2O), leaving simple oxides behind.  Oxides are not usually roasted because they have no volatile constituent to lose.  The oxide form is converted during smelting via some sort of redox reaction (often in the presence of carbon as the reductant).  Some metallic elements will not be reduced by carbon, so other electrochemical means have to be employed.

    Roasting is a devolatilization step, in effect.

    1.Ores can be roasted if the ore is an oxide or sulphide. 

    2. The metal to be obtained MUST be below Carbon (C) is the reactivity series.  If it is above 'C' it can only be extracted by electrolysis. 

    An example is Iron 

    Iron ore (Fe2O3) is roasted in carbon(C)  to produce iron (Fe) and Carbon dioxide (CO2) 

    Reaction equation is 

    2Fe2O3 + 3C = 2Fe + 3CO2 

    However you cannot extract Aluminium by this method as it is above 'C' in the reactivity series, and must be extracted by electrolysis.
