It's a product based on lessons learned from the Wii U, but it is its own system.

The Wii U had a base station that was connected to the TV and a controller with a 420p display built-in to give a 2-screen display for games.  The limitation was the controller had to be no more than 30 feet before it would lose connection so you can't walk too far away from your TV.

The Nintendo Switch kind of reverses that thinking and has the processing done on the handheld system directly so you can take it with you and play away from a TV.  This display is a larger 720p display with detachable controllers on the main model.  This system can be attached to a TV via an included dock which allows for 1080p resolution max.

So like a Wii U you can play on the TV or portable but not limited to 30 feet from the TV.

There is also a Nintendo Switch Lite that has the limitations of controllers that are not detachable (so any games that require detached controllers will have to be bought extra and paired to the system) and will not attach to a dock/TV.  It is a 100% portable system.

It is not a Wii U, but similar. It is Nintendo's newest console.
