Hard to say, Why do they lie about it? Scientology exists to extract $$$$$$ from its members. The PAY TO PLAY religion.
"It's hard to say exactly how many people practice Scientology in the U.S. Many critics suggest that there are between 25,000 and 55,000 active Scientologists, but the church's website claims growth of more than 4.4 million adherents each year."

It's same thing as with christianity, islam, astrology, feng shui, UFO's, anything Trump says... Poeple so badly want to believe and be part of a "cult", and bunches of people will therefor believe just about anything you say to them.

It used to, due to brilliant cult-control techniques, but lately it has dropped its high public profile deliberately. That's because it's switching to property transactions and seeking financial wealth and stability in commercial enterprises. Membership numbers do not seem to be publicly available. I would be surprised if anybody could give membership numbers for this year.
