All considered, I suspect they are the real deal.  Unlike some claim, they did, in fact, look for normal causes to reported events, and did NOT "always" find evidence for a haunting.  Many of those sorts of shows, I wouldn't bother watching, as they are obviously fraudulent, but these guys seemed alright.  There is a new show out with much of the old cast, called Ghost Nation.

The investigations are real. However, some of it is scripted to add more excitement.

Having watched a few episodes, I'd have to say it's neither.  

Those guys claim to be serious paranormal researchers, but they're total reality TV clowns.  Not only do they confirm an active haunting at every location they visit, but they fall into every movie cliche in the book.

Serious paranormal investigators are the absolute opposite of Ghost Hunters.  First, real investigators always start by looking for natural, non-ghostly causes every time.  That's because 99.99% of all paranormal events have a scientific explanation behind them.  

Second, the vast majority of people who research this stuff never encounter an actual paranormal event in their lives.  TAPS, meanwhile, encounters a 'confirmed' haunting every week.  Golly gee, what an amazing coincidence.
