Maybe it's different in the comics but he is so one dimensional in the films.

Hes not nearly as hated in the comics, he has a wife and children and an extended family and he's cheated on his wife and has closer friendships with certain characters, while in the movie basically theres very little of that except that he has a relationship with Jean. Basically the movies of any comic are massively simplified versions that change things, and sometimes they manage to succeed in hitting the spirt of the characters and sometimes it just comes out bland.
