Is a 12 Gauge Shotgun, pump action, a good choice for home defense?

For MY budget of less than $600. Only being kept MY home.

It has pros & cons but the pros mostly outweigh the cons and as a result it is a very common choice.

Make sure you practice with it so that you understand how the recoil feels and practice disengaging the safety.

Choose the right type of ammunition for the situation (generally buckshot for home defense).

Don't fool yourself with this idea that you don't even have to aim because it will just spray shot in that general direction. Buckshot from a smooth bore barrel (no choke) will spread at about 1" per yard. Meaning if you shoot from 5 yards (15 feet) away all of the buckshot pellets will still be within a 5" diameter when they reach the target. So its very much possible to miss with a shotgun even at close range.

Yes, a brand and model with a shortened barrel and pistol grip works best for home defense - something like the Mossberg 590 Shockwave.

Pre-covid they were definitely in your price range, not sure about now as sales for ammo and weapons have been exorbitant to say the least.

Depending on the load you pick, could be ideal.

If that is something you feel comfortable with and have some opportunity to train and practice with, then it is more than adequate
