Why don't we get all of our money back when doing taxes ?
I have noticed we don't get back all of what is taken out by the state and federal government. I get around $1500 which they take more then that.

The IRS makes your employer take an amount that is meant to ensure that your taxes are covered, and you (or your preparer) have to calculate the correct amount of taxes yourself and ask the IRS to return what's left over.

The money you get back after filing your return is actually the amount of overpayments you in your payments all year. What they keep is your share of the costs of running the government.

Why? Because you are being taxed. You have to pay SOME taxes. Just because you overpay doesn't mean you have the right to get it all back. That's what taxes are.

Because if they gave everyone all of their money back the government wouldn't have any money to pay for government programs and the whole tax system would be pointless.

Think hard about the word tax.

Because that's what a tax is - money you give the government.
You only get a refund if you overpay your taxes.
