With great difficulty.

Not really. Can be cross threaded, overtightened, sides can be punched by using wrong tool. Or the old O ring can still be there.. All cause leaks--always Check For Leaks after each oil filter change. Stop engine immediately if you see one.
A drop in type can only go in one way. Its element can be damaged, the cover and tube might not be assembled right. O rings on these can slip out if not careful. I had an old Honda with this type, it fit over oil cooler adapter. Each time, I'd have to replace Both O-rings. And be careful the adapter did not slip when tightening.

No, the canisters pump oil "thru" them, not from one end to the other.

What's the wrong way around? There's only one spot with threads to screw the filter onto the oil filter housing. If you have a car with a paper filter read the directions.

That depends.
There are two basic designs. One is a metal canister (that has the filter element inside) this screws on just one way.
The other is a filter element that sits in a housing, it would be possible to force this one in the wrong way.
BTW:
In regards to design one above, you have to check the old filter to make sure the rubber seal came out and is with it. Don't reinstall a new one over an old seal. Also put some oil on the seal and hand tighten it.
