Did the UK used to have local codes you can dial to call through exchanges?

I believe the codes were 7,8 and 9 but I heard it was in the 80's.

    Yes; all the ones I remember were 9 and one other digit, plus a three or four digit number on that local exchange.

    They could also be "chained", if you knew the local codes for dialling out from those exchanges - with only two digits, the same 9x code had a different destination when used at each local exchange.
