Why do people think hermit crabs don’t need deep substrate and don’t need extra shells?

I am beginning to think that if hermit crabs spend 90% of the time buried, they don’t belong in captivity and shouldn’t be purchased.

Being burrowed often is not a reason to ban a certain pet. You just need to be aware that it might be burrowed all the time before getting that pet so you don't get disappointed. In the case of hermit crabs though they are wild caught which is unsustainable, many die in transportation and after being bought often don't live past a year (in the wild they can live 30 years) so for those reasons they should not be kept as pets.
