Why do they call special schools ?

I joined a special needs school 3 weeks before I turned 15 from the mainstream school.

Now I’m 22, i have got autism spectrum disorder (diagnosed in year 6)

I don’t understand why did they call special schools but everyone is special inside of us. I don’t like using the term special because everyone is special inside and out.

I was in Special Education and it’s called Special School because kids cannot keep up or having difficulty in learning with regular school. For example, cannot read well, do basic math, and other subject in school. I remembered this when I was in middle school. Regular kids would learn algebra, read upper levels awhile we do basics..
