If you said to somebody "don't judge a book by its cover" - what does they mean when they respond "I like your cover"?

I hate when people come up to talk to me because of my appearance, I love makeup and clothes but for my own pleasure - I don't care if people think whether I'm attractive or not, I only care about people who value personality over looks.

Yet, you sometimes get "but I like your "cover" (how you looks like" as responds. Are these people trolling or seriously doesn't understand WHY you said that to them?

Update:

Not sure where this question goes to...so if its wrong, sorry about that!

It's a compliment - appreciate it!  There will come a day when you would love to get compliments.    Liking the cover doesn't mean they don't like the book also
