In Upstart Crow the characters wore masks to protect themselves from 1600s plague, is this historically accurate?

I know people from previous eras tried all sorts of crazy cures (they are presented in Horrible Histories) but I don't think they wore masks.

Update:

Upstart Crow and Horrible Histories are UK shows in case Americans are reading.

Update 2:

Was it just plague doctors who wore masks rather than most people?

It was a Christmas special comparing Shakespeare's era with ours, for comedy purposes, it was not a historical documentary.

Yes, plague doctors did actually wear disturbing looking masks.
