I don't think that Melania relished the role of the activist First Lady and preferred to be out of the limelight.  I'm not sure she was as dumb as you think either.  She will, however, be judged in connection with her husband and he's going to go down as the worst President ever (even worse than Fillmore) and that will badly tarnish her image.
