Furlough is temporary. You will be out for a certain period of time then come back to work. Laid off is permanent.

One is enjoying themselves, the other is struggling and running around looking for another job.

Depends on the company and their terminology, but generally furlough= temporary. Layoff means axe.

Both can mean temporary. But neither guarantee you can come back.

Furlough means you get to come back.  Laid off you don't.

Furlough usually means its temporary. Like you might be forced to take a few days off or even a few weeks, but the intent is that you'll return when there's more work to be done. You're still considered an employee, you just get some unpaid time off. In many cases employees who are furloughed to save money during a downturn keep their benefits such as medical insurance, and sometimes they're allowed to use vacation/sick pay to make up for the lost wages.

Lay off is generally permanent. You no longer work there, you lose your benefits and there's no intention of bringing you back. Some employers or labor unions have recall policies where if they need to hire people within a certain period of time after a layoff the people who got laid off have to be the first ones offered jobs. But even at places that have a recall policy there is no intent to bring back laid off employees - its only IF things change and the company needs to rehire some.

    USA answer.

Furloughed means you are still an employee and your absence is meant to be temporary.   Your benefits like medical insurance usually remain intact during your furlough.

Laid off means your employment is terminated.
