Iran is not a major producer of oil

So to ill answer your question this way

Its much better getting oil from the middle east than Canada

And the reason is the Tar Sands oil we get from Canada is not made into gasoline 

It is so thick and gritty it cannot be refined into gasoline at a reasonable price

Why bother with either? Canadian oil is filling up pipelines that could otherwise be used to transport domestic fracked oil.

Iran is not a major oil producer or a supplier of oil to the US.

It's better to prepare for an oil-free future in 20-30 years.  Building pipelines doesn't do that.  And the tar sands of Canada is not cheap oil - only makes sense at $70-80 a barrel.  Use the easy stuff while you transition away from needing oil at all.

The USA has sanctions on Iran so buying their oil would not be possible at this time. 

Canadian Oil is tar sands oil. It is expensive to mine, ship and refine.
