To help the society as a whole, rather than just the individual. However, the government takes too big of a chunk, and mismanages the money. The government far overestimates their own importance in a society.

To pay for common infrastructure and services.
If we didn’t pay taxes, who pays for defence . You and some friends pay for 1 soldier or sailor.?
Roads? Oh, I make 10 ft outside my house. If everyone builds 10 ft we’ll soon have a Highway system.
Police. Call them when you’re robbed and they give you a $500 bill for turning up?
Understand?

The work of a government - which includes maintaining an army and a police force, building and maintaining roads, establishing schools and paying the teachers and for the textbooks - is not free. Some things are paid for only by the people that use them, such as a toll on some roads. More generally, the cost is spread over the larger population as taxes.

We agreed to create a government
The government needs money to operate
It gets some of it from taxes.
The last 100 years saw the increase in many kinds of different taxes imposed by the government on the people. Previously there were few kinds of taxes in America.
This was done in part because government took on more problems and responsibilities and in part grew in power.

Some community needs are best served by a community-based assignment of duties, and some of the needs have capital costs. The costs of labor and materials etc for providing community needs have to be paid somehow. Taxes are one way to do that.

Public safety, education, and national defense. Of course they have been twisted all over the place but those three, are the primary need for taxes.

The state provides rule of law, trade agreements with other states, defense, and it promotes the general welfare. In order to do these thing, it needs resources. Those resources come from the citizenry. In exchange for you to live safely and in order for you to have the ability to buy, sell and seek legal recourses when wronged, you pay the state for their services.

So the government can pay for roads, police, military, protective social systems, salaries for the lawmakers and their pork projects.
