How can I put 250k in cash in my bank account from under my mattress without getting in trouble ?

Nobody gets in trouble for depositing their own money.  Bank transfers happen all the time,  houses are sold,  stock is sold,  etc.

The bank wanted know where I got $5,000 to open a bank account and I said none of your business. The bank said we don't accept money from just anybody, which made me mad. The 5k came from my public school retirement account so I went to another bank down the street who accepted my money, no questions asked. The year was 1987. 5k in twenty dollar bills will choke a horse.

Be able to explain to the IRS where you got the money. Have proof that you paid tax when you earned it.
