Is tennis supposed to be an individual sport or a team support?

It is mostly an individual one but some people 2 players are against 2 players. So it makes it a team sport, right? Can a player choose to play single only? Or double only? Or the players are expected to do both?

Update:

*sport

Update 2:

*It is mostly an individual one but some times, 2 players are against 2 players. (Damn Text to Speech)

It's an individual sport in singles and a pairs sport in doubles. You can choose to play either singles, or doubles, or both. You can also favor one and play the other occasionally. If you play at a higher level, though, you will have a coaching team behind you but you're still out on court alone (though the WTA tour allows on-court coaching.)
