Decimal positions are 1/10, 1/100, 1/1000 etc. 2.58 extends two digits past the decimal point, so the correct denominator is 100.

2.58 = 258 / 100

To put the fraction in simplest form, check whether the numerator and denominator share any factors.

The only prime factors of 100 are 2 and 5. 258 is clearly not a multiple of 5, but it is a multiple of 2. So divide both numerator and denominator by 2:

258 / 100 = 129 / 50

I would multiply .58 x to equal an integer

The integer easiest is 58

.58 x 100 = 58

Then divide both sides by 100

0.58 = 58/100

2.58 = 258/100

The .58 part is hundredths, so put it over 100.

2 58/100 or 258/100

Since the '.58' moiety has two decimal places then we place the decimal over 100 ( 2 zeroes)

Hence

2 .58 = 2 58/100

Cancel down the fraction by '2'

2 29/50 is the fraction.

2.58=2.58/1=2.58*100/(1*100)=258/100=129/50=2 29/50.

Every number IS already a fraction we just don't normally put the 1 in the denominator (especially if it has a decimal point)

2.58/1

keep multiplying by 10/10 until no decimal in numerator

2.58/1

25.8/10

258/100

Now we can reduce by removing like factors. If both even, I usually divide by 2/2 first.

258/100

129/50

Cannot reduce further

Convert the decimal number to a fraction by placing the decimal number over a power of ten. Since there are 2 numbers to the right of the decimal point, place the decimal number over 2 (100)Next, add the whole number to the left of the decimal.

2.58 = 258/100

Divide by 2 since both numerator and denominator are even. 129/50

129 can be divided further by 1, 3, 43, 129.

50 can be further divided by 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50.

Those 2 don’t share anything in common so 129/50 is in reduced form.
