Which word is correct?
He painted the walls only weeks ago, but they are (fading / paling) already.

If a colour is ''becoming less bright'' then the correct word is FADING.
PALING means something else altogether.
Pailing means ''becoming less important over time''
as in ''His idea was paling into insignificance''.

The better word is "fading". But it's not the walls that are fading, so it would be better to say "but the paint is fading already" or "but the colour is fading already".

Fading--Though it actually the paint, not wall that is fading. But the sentence is correct.
Paling--Refers to some thing becoming less important over time.Source(s): Native Americ as n English speaker.

"Paling" in this sense is used only with faces. "His face paled at the gruesome sight."

the walls aren't what is fading, the paint is fading. fading means to lose color intensity. paling means to turn white (whitish, more like white).

Flaking or peeling would be correct. Paling means something else.
