In what sense is the word “piety” used here?

"Whether or not Tesla ultimately survives as a company— or whether it could have launched without massive government subsidies— Musk’s repositioning of the electric vehicle as an object of desire, rather than a manifestation of consumer piety, is a major shift."

"Piety" means being religious and of course here it's used sarcastically. The "religion" in question is concern for the environment. In other words, electric vehicles have been hyped as good for the environment because of their lack of harmful emissions but now they're being hyped as luxury or prestige items.

sense of worship, or owning things to show some idea of being a good worshiper at the altar of the almighty dollar (look what I can afford, aren't I the best dollar worshiper around?).
