computer monitors are dumb devices and do not have automatic search for signals -- you have to manually set it to the input where the signal is

Monitors don't have channels. It sounds like you're using a TV. Get the TV remote and push the button labeled "Source" or "Input."
It's also likely you can switch input sources with buttons on the TV itself, but as you didn't provide a model, it's impossible to tell you how.
