Was/is polio a contagious disease, person to person?

Yes, it is contagious by the fecal-oral route.  Meaning, if somebody with polio doesn't wash their hands, they can pass it to others.  If the patient is preparing food, and doesn't wash hands first, it can get into the food.  It can get on cups and plates and utensils. The oral-oral route is also possible.

    It is not airborne.
