Is it right that taxpayers should pay private hospital costs for a man 99 years old who has spent his married life on state benefits?

No it isn't and it's not right that he is paid a stripend of £400,000 a year out of which he does not magic more than that amount back into the economy despite Clog saying so. He might well be paying the buper troll out of his £400,000 from the taxpayer but that doesn't mean he is actually self funding.

People bash the Crown, but then never provide the details on a constitutional path towards a republic. I think for the UK the big question would be, if England were to become a republic, why would Scotland, Wales and N.I. have any particular obligation to be part of that republic?

For Canada it is a similar problem, why would First Nations who have treaties with the Crown, and the various colonies that joined under the Crown to become the Dominion of Canada...have any obligation to join the new Republic of Canada? There is a reason Cromwell and Washington had to use violence. Violence would not be an option in Canada, because the generals get cashiered for sexual harassment before they can do anything that involves leadership!

He is in an NHS hospital, and everyone is entitled to use those regardless of whether they pay tax or not.  There are no private beds at Barts Hospital.
