A cross section of the reflector shown is in the shape of a parabola. Which is the equation for the cross section?

a. y^2 = 4x

b. y^2 = 8x

    It's a *horizontal* parabola, so it will have a y² term and have the following form:

    y² = kx

    You can see you have one point (x,y) = (2,4). Plug that in and solve for k:

    4² = 2k

    16 = 2k

    k = 16/2

    k = 8

    Answer:

    y² = 8x
