I have a Hair steamer. Not working on low setting.?

unit should run at 700 watts or 400 watts.

it stopped working on 400. there is a 1n5408 diode involved to reduce wattage to 400 but it keeps burning out.

does anyone out there have any ideas on how to rectify the problem?

Update:

All other components are testing O.K.

buy a new one.  the diode going out again and again strongly suggests the internal heating element isn't right, or the separation between electricity and water isn't complete any longer

Why is the 700 watt circuit still working if there's issues with heating element or water/electricity seperation?
