I always say movie. I live on the U.S. west coast. I say film in more formal writing. As in the phrase 'film school'. Why do British say ,"cinema"?

What country are you speaking about, that says movie?

    Source(s): Native American English speaker.

I've heard them referred to as a movie, film, picture, motion picture, and  a flick.

We use the terms fairly interchangeably, yes.  Movie is the more common term.
